Allston boasts a wide variety of activities largely influenced by its proximity to Harvard University and its storied past.  To see the sights and experience the different aspects of Allston, it is always best to simply walk whenever possible.  The road systems in and around Boston are often very congested and parking can be a challenge.  The main thoroughfare is Harvard Avenue, with the busiest section being between Cambridge Street and Commonwealth Avenue.  Here, one can find a wide array of shops and many interesting restaurants.  A short stroll down Cambridge Street toward Union Square will take you to Twin Donuts which has a delightfully old sign marketing their product.

Walking further down Cambridge Street will bring you to Brighton Center which is at the heart of Brighton.  This area at the corner of Washington Street and Market Street has a wealth of local, independently owned restaurants and exhibits the flavor and tradition of this old town.  There are many excellent bars and taverns further down Washington Street in an area called Oak Square.  This will put you at the western edge of Boston.  There is a trolley system here call the Green Line C that can take you down Chestnut Hill Avenue.  This area is called Cleveland Circle, lying next to the town of Brookline, which has many restaurants, bars, and even a movie theater.

Of course, a large part of Harvard University sits in Allston, including the acclaimed Harvard Business School and Harvard Stadium.  The university is one of the oldest in the country, founded in 1636 and boasts the fact that among its graduates, seven were U.S. Presidents.  Harvard also has several art museums and is considered a world leader in the arts.  The local community embraces the research centers and art museums and is a key component of their community.  A large portion of museum professionals around the world have been educated or impacted by Harvard University.

A popular nearby attraction is the McMullen Museum of Art located at 140 Commonwealth Avenue at Boston College.  The non-profit museum is operated by the college and is open seven days a week.  While on campus, you will notice the Jesuit-Catholic tradition of Boston College.  One of the most interesting things to see here is the Gothic architecture, especially in the middle of the campus.  Finally, there is the nearby attraction of the home of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1837-1882).  The famous writer called this area his home and created some of his most memorable works.  The Longfellow National Historic site is located at 105 Brattle Street in Cambridge.
